CINCINNATI, OHIO - March, 2015 - Lakota Local Schools selected local telecom solutions provider Powernet to revamp and improve the district’s aging WiFi infrastructure. Powernet, who installed stateoftheart Ruckus Wireless equipment in both of Lakota’s high schools, two freshman school buildings and all four junior high schools, is run by CEO and Lakota High School graduate Allison Stevens.

“We had a great opportunity in this partnership with my alma mater to enhance the learning environment for both the students and teachers,” Stevens said. “My daughter and I spent most of our lives in the district, and I’m happy our business can contribute to its success and growth.”

The project was made possible by the passage of the school district’s November 2013 levy, which called for several technology upgrades to enhance student instruction. When Lakota’s request for proposal (RFP) went out to numerous organizations to help replace its outdated WiFi network, three companies responded.

Powernet, utilizing Ruckus Wireless technology, was able to expand coverage and capacity within each building while installing fewer access points, ultimately minimizing the cost of the project.

“It was important for us to find a solution that would allow us to better leverage technology in our schools without adding any undue burden on our finances and personnel,” said Todd Wesley, Executive Director of Technology at Lakota. “We were impressed with the solution Powernet proposed to accommodate those needs.”

This was the first large education wireless network installation meeting the new 802.11ac network standard, and Stevens sees the partnership as a win for everyone involved.

“This is one more tool teachers and administrators can use to improve education and efficiency within the district while minimizing resources and effort needed on the backend from the schools,” she explained.

The WiFi install was completed by Powernet last summer and the network was ready for use in the 2014-2015 school year.
