Employee Spotlight: Missy Howell

Describe what you do at Powernet:

I am our Billing Analyst, I handle Risk and maintain our Fraud system. I completed training in July as a PostgreSQL Database Administrator - and I’m so excited to become our in-house DBA!

What do you love most about your job?

It's interesting. I’m never bored. My various roles require that I’m always learning something new. I have to learn and understand any new product offerings and technologies - that’s the only way I can create them in the system to bill our clients, figure out what tax treatment to apply.

Do you have a favorite project you've worked on?

I don’t work on development projects in the same way the rest of BAS does. Most of my involvement is as our schema architect, making changes to the database structure to support development. And I help test for those projects. Analysis and development for the rating and billing world is very different compared to Software. I love building new mediators - making logic out of a CDR layout. Picking a string apart, figuring out what each piece means, and turning it into a usage record in our system. That’s fun for me!

Why should customers choose Powernet?

Because we’re good. Good meaning - we’re good people. We care about our clients, we will be as creative and inventive as we need to be to provide solutions for them. And if we make a mistake - we make it right.

What's the best thing about your job?

I get to work with a wonderful team, doing what I love to do. And I can still learn and grow. Starting out in Customer Service in 2002, I never dreamed I would be where I am now, in 2022. Still growing. I’m grateful all the time.

What do you like to do when you're not at the office?

I’m ashamed (not really) to say I’m a bit of a couch potato! I binge a ton of shows. And I love listening to Audibles. Everything Neil Gaiman! I love to cook. That was something I couldn’t do well pre-COVID. And now I make delicious meals every week. It may be weird, but I really love grocery shopping, too.

If you could pick one superpower, what would it be?

Hope. Hope is powerful. There isn’t anything that can stand against it, or kill it. Hope is light. Hope endures.

Advice for others who might want a career similar to yours:

Be willing to start at the bottom, learn everything about the business you can along the way. Then use that knowledge to decide what you really want to do, and do it. Make sure it’s something you enjoy. We spend much of our time working - we should enjoy it.

Do you have a secret talent? If so, what is it?

I have a photographic memory, I don’t know if it’s a talent, but it comes in handy!
